Well made suribachi and surikogi. This is definitely a genuine Japanese made one. I really like how the bidirectional ridges were designed for the user to go in any direction with ease. I opted to get this over the traditional mortar and pestle since some had to get primed and whether it be marble (I.e. too smooth to perform some other functions), lava rock (i.e. need to prime with rice grains several time before use to reduce the lava rock particles), granite (i.e. very heavy), wood (i.e. scents usually linger after washing), or steel (slippery?) they all had pros and cons. I just wanted ONE that would serve MOST of my needs. Perhaps a trained chef would have more, but this is not my profession. I felt this suribachi fit the build. I also choose this one over their other design, b/c the suribachi’s bowl appeared to have a stabler format. The other one by Mino Ware had a higher center of gravity which appeared to me I may have issues with stability when grinding/bruising stuff albeit I loved the color. I chose function over color. Now I won’t have seed pods jumping out of my bowl since I didn’t previously own a mortar and pestle. I hope you enjoy it should you decide to purchase one.

It was hard to find one that is affordable and NOT made in China. I have bought dog toys from China because of expense and found them to be filled with newspapers and trash, and the recall with toys from China years ago...I just don't trust that they have any quality control. This item is beautiful enough to be set out on the table. It is so easy to clean and the pestle fits my hand well. It's not too big or too small or too light or too heavy. It's just right and balanced with Japanese writing on it. It would make a great gift.

Beautiful, and it looks like it will be a tremendous Siribachi and mortar and pestle. Will update this review (if able, in a few months time), after have tried various ingredients with it. Thank you. Seller Feedback (seller - KOMEKOME-YA: Great seller also (it seems I am unable to return to seller feedback, so writing it here in the product review) - for the seller, 5 stars, quick shipment, product in great condition. Thank you!

I really like this Suribatchi and Surikogi. I watched Alice Waters use one of these and did some research resulting in the purchased this one. I have used it to grind cacao nibs. The nibs become a thick paste and I use either warm water or warm milk and a pastry brush to release the paste from the ripples. I like the waved design of the ripples. It seems to help keep things down into the Suribatchi when grinding. I like the pour spouts on both sides as well. Very happy with this product and glad it was made in Japan, not China.
