You do have to dry them out in an oven at the correct temperature for long enough to drive off the absorbed moisture. Cons: - 5 gram packs are small so you need to add several to larger mason jars. These silica gel moisture absorbing packs are excellent for adding to sealed or vacuum sealed containers to keep the contents dry for extended shelf life of foods. NOTE: In order to preserve foods for the maximum amount of time, Oxygen absorber packs must be used also to remove the oxygen that can cause oils and fats to turn rancid or cereal grains to loose their nutrient contents. Moisture reacts with the materials in the Oxygen Absorber packs (iron and salt) to overcome and deactivate the Oxygen Absorbers so having a moisture absorber in with the product will enhance the storage shelf life. The quantity of the moisture absorber packs you need to have in the container is entirely dependant on the amount of moisture in the product also in the container. Putting these absorbers in with moist product does no good unless you add a large number of moisture absorber packs. Similarly, doing your packaging in a damp environment leaves a lot of moisture to be absorbed by the moisture absorber packs. Vacuum sealing helps to pull out moist air and increase the efficacy of the moisture and oxygen absorbers but it only helps so much. Bottom line: Do an internet search on how much moisture and oxygen absorbers you should have in a particular size container with a particular material. That will give you a guideline. I have used these moisture absorbers for many purposes from keeping vitamins and medicines fresher, to short term food storage in sealed containers (spices and teas), to long term food storage in buckets, to bagging and sealing tools and supplies for long term storage against rust and corrosion. Finally, I would again like to emphasize that moisture absorbers only absorb moisture and do not prevent oxidation of food (nuts, oils, fats, dried meats, etc.) so they can go rancid even with moisture absorbers. Using oxygen absorbers along with the moisture absorbers in fully sealed containers (vacuum sealed, if possible) is still the best way to preserve foods and other materials for long term storage.

Great product

They are smaller (my fault) than I would have liked. To compensate, I put two in each spice bottle. I am in a climate with an average of 80% + humidity. For locations with lower humidity levels, these packets would be perfect

For food perseverance

2nd time I have order these. I have a farm , and use them in my dry meats jars or our jerky, and mushrooms, to help keep any moisture from developing. The list goes on and on . Dry veggies in a jar , fruit etc.
