FoodSaver 5860 Series Vacuum Sealer Machine

I bought this to use with my sous vide, and it does that beautifully. The learning curve is minimal. I dispense the length of bag that I’d like, hit the cut and seal button, and it pops out in a few seconds. Then you fill it, redistribute the contents to make it even, and pop the opened end into the slot on the front of the machine. You don’t even have to press anything. The sensor does its job and vacuums out the air and seals it automatically. The machine comes with a marinating Tupperware-type deal, an 8” roll for customized bags, an 11” roll for customized bags, some precut freezer bags, and some precut pantry bags. You pop open the top of the FoodSaver to insert the roll for the customized bags, and there are illustrations inside showing you how to insert the roll. Nice feature. I love it when the directions are right there, but not visible from the outside of the machine. I use the customized bags and marinating tub the most often. Refill rolls are available in bulk on Amazon. The marinating function is really cool. It’s a 10 minute speed marinating process. You pop in the protein and marinade into the tub, attach the marinating wand, and push the button. 10 minutes later it’s done and the flavor fully penetrates the meat like you’ve left it there all day. Nice. I want to try this with tofu. You can usually only get flavor on the surface of that. I wonder if the marinade will penetrate with this. I’ll update this after I experiment. This preserves food really well. We just spent a week hiking in one of the National parks. The Airbnb we rented didn’t have a kitchen at all, just a mini fridge. The town had one just one restaurant (terrific place, but…) and a convenience store, so I wanted to bring our own food. I made breakfast and dinner kits using the food saver, froze the meats, and popped it all into a cooler, and picked up an electric skillet. It worked beautifully. I was really surprised that the guacamole didn’t discolor, the pico de gallo only softened slightly, and the flavor I’d put in the burgers and chicken were really intensified. The restaurant would have been $120/day, so the FoodSaver and skillet paid for themselves in less than 2 days. I should have bought this a long time ago. I see that some people are having sealing issues after owning it for a while, so I’ll update this over time. So far, I’m really impressed.

I was a little skeptical about how much "savings" this kitchen gadget could produce since the bags are expensive, but with a little experimenting I have grown to love this vacuum sealer. It is essential to my meal prep routine and produces fantastic results. A few tips that I learned through trial and error: 1) Juicy Food! If you make juicy food like a big juicy chicken breast, the juice can interfere with the seal. As the machine pulls the air out, liquid also goes up the machine. There is a little catch for juice overflow (the tray is dishwasher safe and very convenient), but the machine works by heating the bag to seal it. Too much juice doesn't allow the heat to seal. The solution is very simple: freeze the food first. I place my soups, stews, chicken, etc in the bag and use a chip clip to hold it closed. I then carefully place the bags in the freezer so they stay upright and let them freeze. Soups and stews need to frozen before vacuum sealing. Chicken breasts just need a 15-20 minutes. 2) Bags Unfortunately the FoodSaver bags are little expensive. However I use other bags I've found on Amazon without issue. Certain FoodSaver brand bags are also part of the "subscribe and save" program on Amazon which also saves money. I don't trust washing out bags that have been used with meats, but reusing bags works for dehydrated fruits and home made chips. 3) Containers Don't skip on the containers. The FoodSaver 3, 5, and 8 cup containers are the best. I use them for leftovers that will be eaten soon and save the bags for things that will be stored longer. When I'm tired on a Wednesday and would've normally ordered Pizza or something, I have meals ready. The vegetables are as fresh on Friday as they were the day I cut them a week earlier. I have been much more successful at sticking to my eating plan with meals that I prepped on Sunday. I use the little bags (8") for lunches and the big bags (11") for dinner. Anyways, I love the machine. It has helped me stay healthy with home cooked meals!

I purchased this to replace my 10 year old foodsaver which no longer properly vacuum sealed anymore. This model 5860 is much more convenient to use and completely address any issues I ever had with my old model. I hope it lasts as long as that one did. In every respect it is superior so longevity is the only question and time will tell. Unfortunately time has told the tale as I used it twice the first week with no problem but the next time i tried it would not power up. Just a blinking progress light and it would keep turning off. I have returned it to Amazon and have just received a replacement which seems to work fine so far but its only been one day so we will see. If this unit fails within the next 30 days I will return it and request a lesser model in the hope it is less likely to fail. Amazon has been great which helps deal with the frustration of buying a product that is defective so soon after receiving it. I will leave the five star rating for now because when it works it is fantastic but if this new unit gives me any trouble I will have to drop the score to reflect the fact it is too unreliable to recommend purchasing.

I've used the F5200 for almost 5-6 years now replacing it 2x and this last time I think was a lemon and stopped working in less than a year but Foodsaver was great to replace, however, I couldn't wait and ended up purchasing this one in the meantime since I use it everyday and needed one and this is SO much better - each time I use it always works and make things so much easier. I bulk a lot so this is easier than pushing down a bar with 2 hands and is automatic. The dispenser is a bit slow but it's ok. I like the ability to forward and backward the roll to the size I want. And this comes with a 5-year warranty so I trust this.
